Robert Crosbie Geisha - Solemn City

about

In terms of the background to the song, it is part of an album I am currently recording called “Afterglow”. This will be my 9th album, and I’ve been recording it since spring this year.

Since 2007 I’ve made music ranging from slow ambient, to trip-hop and progressive electronica. This time around, I wanted to combine an 80s feel and sound with more regular elements of my music, such as shoegaze guitars, jazzy electric piano, synths, and deep bass.

“Solemn City” was recorded in August, and was built out of the opening keyboard sound, which I chanced upon when I played my Roland FP-4 through a Zoom digital effects pedal. From there it grew. I was inspired by the sounds of chillwave and synthwave, though I didn’t want the track to stick too rigidly to those genres. I wanted it to be more upbeat and include lead guitars and live drums.

To me, “Solemn City” evokes a late-summer feeling, though with a melancholy edge. It should act as a great introduction to the new album.
