Talia Grace - St. Louis

about

I wrote St. Louis about a relationship that fell apart the more time we spent together. The majority of the early days of our blossoming romance were spent separated by distance; he was in St. Louis, I was in Austin. I think we were infatuated with the idea of one another rather than the real person at the other end of the text conversations and phone calls. I wrote the song as an attempt to cope with the fact that I’d fallen for someone who liked me a whole lot better when I wasn’t actually around. I was grappling with these unrequited feelings of commitment, and I came to realize that many of my relationships are decidedly unequal. I tend to feel much more strongly about the people I love than they feel about me, which is not an unfamiliar feeling to many hopeless romantics. St. Louis may sound like a song about a boy, but at its core, it is a song about me and others like me. The inspiration behind my songwriting is a desire to connect and resonate with people of all walks of life. I am always motivated by the idea that music is the universal language. St. Louis is just one attempt at speaking that language.

lyrics

St. Louis

Lay me on a table
Put flowers in my hair
Cover me with pretty things, and pretty words
And leave me there

And if you ask me nicely,
I’ll skin my knees for you.
Walk across the country
’Til I’ve worn down all my shoes

And I wish that you would go back to St. Louis
‘Cause you love me more when you don’t see my face
And I’ll dress up all these memories
That I can’t get out from under
‘Cause heartbreak might look better in lace

I’d set my skin on fire
So you could warm your hands
I put myself back together
So you can break me down again

‘Cause it can get addicting
To tell myself you’ll change your mind
Those lips look awful sweet now
Even though they’re good at telling lies

I wish that you would go back to St. Louis
‘Cause you love me more when you don’t see my face
And I’ll dress up all these memories
That I can’t get out from under
‘Cause heartbreak might look better in lace

So I’ll crumple up all of my love letters
Yeah, I’ll rewrite the words to my love songs
I thought that we were halfway to forever
But forever doesn’t always last that long

So I wish that you would go back to St. Louis
‘Cause you love me more when you don’t see my face
And I’ll dress up all these memories
That I can’t get out from under
‘Cause heartbreak might look better
I swear, heartbreak looks better in lace
